Keys and finger movements
Keyboard layout: English US.
Word frequency range: 1 - 500.
A familiar word may feel easy until one awkward pair of letters interrupts the rhythm. Notice where that happens: a repeated letter, a reach to another row, or two keys handled by the same finger. Give that movement a little more time. On another attempt, see whether the hesitation has eased, even if your overall speed is much the same.
Typing frequently used words
Practicing frequently used words is useful for improving typing speed and accuracy. These words appear often in everyday writing, so they are included in keyboard typing lessons. Repeating their letter sequences builds muscle memory for the finger movements, helping you type them more fluently and accurately. Recognizing a familiar word as a whole when reading is different from learning to type it; typing still requires practice with its letters.
English has a large vocabulary. Researchers have estimated that an adult native speaker with a university education knows around 20,000 word families, although individual vocabularies vary. A word family includes a base word and related forms, such as inflections and derived words. Frequency counts also depend on how words are grouped.
When counting by lemma (dictionary headword), a word and its inflected forms are counted together. In one study of written English, the 1,000 most common lemmas covered about 72 percent of all word occurrences in the sample. That measures how often those words occur, not how much a reader understands. Practicing common English words can improve your typing, but it does not by itself mean you have mastered the language.
AgileFingers has lessons drawn from the 2,000 most common words. Typing complete texts gives you another way to practice these words in context, where they naturally appear more often than rare words.
Short, common words are easy to rush. Notice whether you race through them and then stop before a longer word. Try a pace that leaves time to prepare the next word's first movement. A steadier passage can be more useful practice than a quick burst followed by a long search for a key.
